There are some emails, which keep doing the rounds for ages.  One that caught my attention, in the last couple of months has the following text:

Where to cross the border?

If You Cross The North Korean Border Illegally You Get 12 Years Hard Labour.

If You Cross The Iranian Border Illegally You Are Detained Indefinitely.

If You Cross The Afghan Border Illegally, You Get Shot.

If You Cross The Saudi Arabian Border Illegally You Will Be Jailed.

If You Cross The Chinese Border Illegally You May Never Be Heard Again.

If You Cross The Venezuelan Border Illegally You Will Be Branded A Spy And Your Fate Will Be Sealed.

If You Cross The Cuban Border Illegally You Will Be Thrown Into Political Prison To Rot.

If You Enter Britain Illegally You Will be Arrested, Prosecuted And Sent To Prison And Deported

If You Are A Pakistani or a Bangladeshi And Illegally Cross The Indian Border You Get

–  A Ration Card

–  Passport (1 or more)

–  Rice Subsidy

–  A Driving License

–  Voter Identity Card

–  Job Reservation

–  Special Privileges

–  Credit Cards

–  Subsidized Rent Or A Loan To Buy A House

–  Free Education

–  Free Health Care

–  A Lobbyist In New Delhi, with a ready Television Channel & group of expert human right activists.

–  The right to talk about secularism, which was not heard of, back home.

And of course – Voting Rights!!

I wanted to add, somebody forgot to include Sri Lankan Tamils in Tamil Nadu!

Down south, we also entertain the under privileged with colour television sets and dish antennas and we even lobby for citizenship for refugees. Worst case-scenario, we bog down New Delhi with statistics and welfare program details, that at least  the refugees will manage to become eligible for a Permanent Residency.

I am an Indian born and brought up in my country.  I am proud of being an Indian.  I gave up opportunities to settle abroad, continue to believe that I have to BE THE difference if I believe in making a difference to the lives of my fellow Indians, I keep raising flags offline, and lament and post the rights and wrongs of the society online –  despite being  looked upon as some kind of a jerk, and I….and I don’t even get my cooking gas supply on time!

We spend most of our lives standing in queues, fighting for basic rights, sometimes even get applauded by those who share your woes, watch haplessly the plight of the standard of living which has no respect for quality, feel hoarse shouting about the absolute lack of civic sense in people and most of all the break down of basic human ethics and values in day-to-day life.  In India, you can forget about aiming for excellence –  just living your life with the hope that the universal values of truth, justice, peace, freedom, social progress, equal rights and human dignity will prevail, is a tough call.

So, here is a hearty welcome to all those who cross the border – Welcome to being an Indian citizen.

Shocked? No, it’s the only way, you can ensure that these cross-border folks do not live on your taxes. Make them Indian citizens, and systematically deny them everything, but by then they too will become too proud of being Indian, to lament.  And they will keep the myth of India alive.

So, you see it’s all done with a vision! The system and the political leadership does have a way with these things!
